Most common causes of loss of libido in men

It is believed that loss of libido in men (15%) is rare compared to women (30%), but recently there has been an up rise in the male cases related to such sexual dysfunction. Loss of libido or lack of sexual desire can spell disaster for any relationship. But, no need to worry; if you know proper causes of any disease, then you can easily root out the problem and will be normal quickly, so here is your way….

Both physical and psychological reasons can be responsible for the occurrence of loss of libido in men.

1. Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction or Impotence, and loss of libido are not the same but if you experience one, you are likely to feel the other sooner or later. Low libido is a common emotional side effect caused due to the ED. Usually; men with ED have a strong, undiminished sex drive and they just have difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection because of circulatory or nerve problems. While, men with a lack of libido may be able to sustain a robust erection once aroused but their sex drive is low.

Thus, erectile dysfunction or impotence is in fact the lack of erection or short duration of erection insufficient in giving the sexual satisfaction to both the partners. Once a man experiences ED, he may get anxious and might be afraid of that it will happen again. Thus, his confidence is shaken and his libido shuts down to preserve his ego. Drugs can help - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are the drugs that can be used to treat men with ED.

2. Hormone Imbalance

In men, testosterone is the major player with libido. It is one of the most common & easily treatable causes. Testosterone level is the physical factor to determine the sexual desire in men. Normally, Testosterone levels decrease in men, even beginning to drop in the 20s and there is a continual drop, especially after age 60.
Lower testosterone levels so called a hormone imbalance can lead to loss of libido. Injury, inflammation, or tumors in the testicles cause Low testosterone. Cirrhosis of the liver or pituitary diseases is also responsible in reducing the amount of testosterone in the body. The liver is responsible for breaking down estrogen; whenever it fails, estrogen level goes up and causes a lack of sexual drive. Unfortunately, there are about 25% of men who may have lower testosterone levels. Testosterone replacement therapy is good and effective option to resolve the problem but very few men are really candidates for it.

3. Stress

You might have noticed that the drastic term - stress is root for almost all types of disorders. Job stress and relationship related stress are big factors for the loss of sexual desire in men. Generally, men are high conscious about self-esteem; so if a man's performance at work is challenged, and he doesn't feel that he is achieving or doesn't feel self-worth, he repeatedly numbs himself sexually. Men carry their baggage of home and work responsibilities on their mind seriously and bog down. Even, many of them constantly think over what has happened at work and that can distract them from developing an intimate relationship with their partner. If all these continue over the time, these also can lead to a loss of sexual drive.

If you constantly feel tired or stressed, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol, for long time, it can interfere with your body’s hormone levels, and cause a loss of libido. Also, the arteries can be contracted and restrict the blood flow in response to stress, which in result lead to erectile dysfunction. Thus, stress and exhaustion have a major impact on your happiness, which distracts you and take your mind off sexual desire. Just try to make some lifestyle changes or speak to your GP for advice.

4. Medications

Like alcoholism, drug use also disrupts hormone balance, leading to low sexual desire. Certain medications like SSRI type of anti-depressants, anti-androgenic drugs, tranquilizers and blood pressure medicines hold back the sexual drive. Regular consumption of such medicines can cause loss of sex drive. Some unlawful substances like heroin, cocaine and marijuana may also cause loss of libido, if used heavily and chronically.
Try to use alternative drugs for depression and other conditions that may have less impact on sexual desire.

5. Drinking and Smoking

Drinking excess amount of alcohol can damage testicular cells and brain cells, causing sexual dysfunction. It also impairs your nervous system and leads to fatigue that make it difficult to become aroused. For example, marijuana suppresses the pituitary gland, which regulates the production of testosterone. Thus, addiction to smoking and drinking can destroy a person’s desire for sex. A little alcohol no more than three to four units a day may be OK but too much can lead to loss of libido in men.

6. Relationship Issues

Relationship problems are one of the most common causes of loss of libido. Negative emotions like constant fights, anger, arguments, disloyalty, communication problems, and growing distance between couples add to the woes and make sex a tiresome and unexciting activity. If the problem continues for an extended period of time then loss of sexual desire is bound to happen. If couple is fighting or feeling distant from each other, then they are less likely to want to be close. In the case, just consider whether you are happy in your relationship or not? Also, make sure about that Is there any problem in a performance issue that makes sex difficult or unfulfilling? For example, Premature ejaculation or impotence in male cases, while painful sex or vaginismus in female cases.

Even, some men have more love and respect for their partners especially after the birth of a baby, which can also become an obstacle in losing of sexual desire. They feel too regressive, too incestuous in eroticizing the mother of their children. Try Psychosexual counseling, a form of relationship therapy where in you and your partner can freely discuss about any sexual or emotional issues that may be contributing to your loss of libido.

7. Menopause

For a number of reasons, women may experience low libido during their menopause. During these years Estrogen levels drop suddenly and causing vaginal tissue to become dry. Consecutively, this can lead to discomfort and pain during intercourse and discourage a woman’s sexual desire, meanwhile affects husband’s sexual desire. Also, it lowers testosterone, the hormone that boosts libido in women as well as men, which is unfavorable condition.

8. Hypothyroid (Under active thyroid)

Tiredness, weight gain and feeling depressed are common signs of an underactive thyroid. It is believed that your thyroid gland (located in the neck) does not produce enough hormones. In result, low libido may be caused by an underactive thyroid.

9. Anxiety, depression or other emotional diseases

Feeling unhappy, miserable or fed up are practical examples of depression. In the case, it is too hard to feel sexual when you're suffering from a serious illness where you may have feelings of severe sadness that can last for a long time. Due to this, your daily life, including your sex life is highly disrupted. Libido and depression share a complicated link, as Depression can change the body's biochemistry as well your sex interest.
