Medicinally Useful Herbs available in Gujarat, India

Herbs are an important part of human life since the ancient time. Herbs play an effective role in one’s life. Earlier when there were no doctors and medicines, then it was only herbs that were used to cure the diseases. They were not only use to cure diseases only but also used to flavor the food, as a source of nutrients and many other useful purposes. Different herbs are used for the different purposes.

Following are some useful herbs available in Gujarat:

1, Ricinus communis (Erandi, Castor)

Castor seed oil can be used for curing joint pains and arthritis. It is really beneficial for the patients of constipation. Castor oil is also best for skin as it can be used to treat many skin problems like warts, sunburn, acne, stretch marks, age spots and ringworm & athletes foot. A drop of castor oil on the stye can give a great relief from inflammation and pain of the eyes.

2, Allium cepa

This herb is really common especially in Indian kitchen and commonly known as onion. It is most commonly used for colds, coughs and flu. According to a study, it can be used to prevent cardiovascular disease, even certain head and neck tumors. Some studies suggest that if it is taken at the high amount along with garlic, then it can be useful to lower the chances of stomach cancer for 40%.

3, Withania somnifera Dunal

Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal is most commonly known as Ashwagandha. This herb has multiple benefits such as it reduce the stress level, remove free radicals and thus aging. It is useful to the patients of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It has anti-cancer benefits too.

4, Ferula foetida Regel

Ferula foetida Regel (F. assa-foetida L.) is more commonly known as Hing. Hing is also beneficial in fighting the viruses like H1N1 virus and swine flu. It is also used for the digestion purpose. It is also useful especially for women in curing problems like excessive and painful menstruation, dysmenorrheal and has positive benefits in treating Candida infection. It is a natural remedy for colic in babies.

5, Ocimum basilicum L

Ocimum basilicum is commonly known as basil. It is very popular among the Indians. It has many health benefits like it reduces the level of stress, diabetes and asthma. It has anti-bacterial, anti- cancer and antioxidant properties. It is also used as an herbal remedy for the diseases related to kidneys, bladder, brain, heart and lungs. 6, Embelia ribes Burm

Embelia is really useful herb as its each part has some usefulness in one’s life. It is really useful for skin fungal infections, headache, constipation, indigestion, tooth ache. 7, Foeniculum vulgare L

Foeniculum vulgare L is most commonly known as saunf. It is useful in digestion, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, flushing the kidneys, detoxifier, boost up metabolism, helpful after chemotherapy and radiation. Its roots are also useful for treating urinary tract infection.

8, Mesua ferrea L.

11, Hibiscus rosa- sinensis L

Hibiscus Rosa- sinensis is most commonly known as Jasud in Gujarati. Hibiscus can be useful in diabetes control, Control’s hypertension, wound healing, help with damaged/inflamed tissues and cure diarrhea. The root of Hibiscus is used to treat cough. The use of Hibiscus leaves is another therapy for good hair. It also helps in weight-loss, prevents constipation and bladder infections.

12, Punica granatum

13, Citrus medica

14, Basella rubra

15, Datura metel, D. fastuosa

Datura can be used for respiratory ailments, anxiety disorders, skin conditions, fever, heart diseases, and litany of other conditions. It can be also used to treat asthma either as an incense or smoke.

16, Solanum xanthocarpum Sehrad & Wendll

Solanum xanthocarpum Sehrad & Wendll is also known as Bhoy Ringani or Bethi Bhoringani in Guajarati. This plant is helpful in treating burning sensation, cough, fever, asthma. The fruit’s paste can be used to treat pimple and swelling. It also has blood purifying, cardio stimulant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

17, Arachis hypogaea

Arachis hypogaea is most commonly known as peanut, groundnut. Peanut oil is really healthy for heart and it improves oxidant-antioxidant status without increasing blood lipids. Its leaves are used for ear-drops against ear discharge. It is a great source of resveratrol which has properties like anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties.

18, Aloe vera (L.) Burm

19, Zizyphus jujuba Lam.

20, Vitex negundo L

Its roots are used in leprosy, antidote to snake venom, dysentery, urinary disorders, malarial fever and other general debility. 21, Tinospora cordifolia L

22, Croton tiglium L

23, Capparis decidua L
