Hotdog is among the most consumed foods each year, which is loved by both kids and adults. Hot dogs are often eaten at sporting events, local picnics & carnivals as well as while enjoying the day at a barbeque. As per National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume 20 billion hotdogs annually which means 70 hotdogs per every person. Hotdogs (cooked sausages) are made from pork, beef, chicken, veal, poultry or turkey. They can be made easily at home as well as taste great and cook quickly without using any special equipment. You can cook hotdogs in many ways such as microwaved, grilled, broiled, fried and boiled. You can pair hotdogs with a variety of toppings and side items. As you make hotdogs at home, you can make your hotdog healthy by using low-fat and low-sodium hot dogs; cutting down the amount of chili, cheese and mayonnaise to decrease the calorie & fat as well as using whole wheat, spelt or sprouted bread buns. Healthy Hotdog Recipes

The mystery of unpleasant tough texture of hot dogs (when vegetable oils are replaced with animal fat) has been solved by Anna M. Herrero and colleagues. Herrero`s team carried out a study to find out the technological and structural characteristics (of lipids and proteins) of frankfurters reformulated sausages with olive oil-in-water emulsions. They used IR spectrometer to confirm that sausages prepared from heart-healthy olive oil-in-water emulsion stabilized with casein were somewhat tougher. The sausages turned out to be much tougher when they were elaborated with an emulsion stabilized with casein and microbial transglutaminase mixture.

Recipes to Make Healthy Hotdog

Chicago-Style Hot Dogs

Ingredients:
  • Celery salt
  • Yellow mustard
  • 8 Vienna beef hot dogs
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes
  • ½ cup sweet pickle relish
  • 16 sport bell peppers/16 pepperoncini peppers
  • ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 8 whole-wheat hot dog buns, with poppy seeds
Method of Preparation:

First of all, preheat the grill. Then, cut tomatoes in slices (crosswise) and cut every slice in half. Take the hot dogs and grill them till they become brown. Grill the buns (cut side down) till they toast, by splitting them. You should grill buns just before the serving. Now, put the hotdog in every bun and place tomato slices and two peppers between all hotdogs and buns. On the top of every hot dog, spread mustard as well as scatter onion and pickle relish. Finally, put a dash of celery salt and it is ready to serve.

Banh Mi Hot Dog Recipe

Ingredients:
  • Lime wedge
  • 2 tsp low-fat mayonnaise
  • 1 hot dog
  • 1 Tbsp fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 Tbsp shredded carrot
  • 1 whole-wheat hot dog bun, toasted
  • 1 Tbsp halved and thinly sliced cucumber
Method of Preparation:

Grill the hot dog on preheated grill. Now take a toasted bun and spread mayonnaise in it. Then put grilled hot dog in the bun and top it with cilantro, carrot and cucumber. At the end, add squeeze of lime and serve it.

Veg Hot Dogs Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 finely chopped Onion
  • 2 Cheese cubes
  • 2 whole-wheat Hot Dog Buns
  • 1 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Finely chopped tomato
  • 1 Finely chopped capsicum
  • 1 cup Boiled rice or potato
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli powder
  • Salt
Mayonnaise:
  • 10 gm Curd (remove water)
  • 10 ml salad oil 10 gm Creme
  • 10 gm Boiled potatoes
  • Salt
  • sugar
  • Vinegar
  • Pepper Powder
  • Mustard powder
Method of Preparation:

Take hot dog buns and cut them horizontally as well as scoop out little bread from centre. Take a pan, add butter in it. As the butter heated, add onions and sauté them. Now, add tomatoes & capsicum and cook them. Then put rice/ potato, grated cheese and vegetables in the pan. Take the pan off the heat and mix mayonnaise. Fill this mixture in the scooped bun and apply butter outside the bun. Finally bake the bun at 20 degrees for 10 mins.

Method to make Mayonnaise

In a bowl, whisk curd and add creme, salad oil drop by drop beating continuously. After that, add boiled potatoes, vinegar, sugar, pepper powder, salt & mustard powder and mix them properly.
