Belviq is FDA approved anti-obesity pill

The first innovative prescription drug for long-term weight loss, Arena Pharmaceutical's anti-obesity pill Belviq has been approved on Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration. Belviq becomes the first federal-approved prescription drug for weight loss in 13 years and is expected to enter the U.S. market in the next decade. This drug got approval from FDA so it seems to be safe enough and called as a new weight-loss treatment by doctors. This pill is for adults, who are overweight or are obese and have at least one medical complication, like high cholesterol or diabetes.

You can use this drug, if you are consuming a healthy diet and doing exercise. As per Obesity Society President Patrick O'Neil, the drug's approval encouraged him because it highlights the notion that changes in lifestyle are not sufficient to treat obesity. As per experts, it could be a significant first step in developing new treatments that assault the basic reasons of obesity, albeit the effects of Belviq are subtle. Arena's drug in 2010 was not approved by FDA because scientists tested the drug on animals and found elevated anxieties about tumors.

When the drug was resubmitted with additional data earlier this year by the company, FDA told, there was little danger of tumors in human beings. Many doctors have requested the FDA to approve new weight loss treatments as the U.S. obesity rates approaching 35 percent of the adult populace. A long line of direction weight loss offerings have been connected with safety problems, the majority especially the fen-phen combination that was associated to heart valve damage in 1997.

FDA did not approve the cocktail of phentermine and fenfluramine that was a popular weight loss combination and prescribed by doctors. According to the FDA, Belviq does not seem to activate a chemical pathway that was associated to the heart problems, observed with the use of fen-phen. Belviq drug works on a diverse chemical pathway in the brain, which is supposed to decrease hunger by increasing feelings of fullness and satiety.

It is believed that Vivus Inc.'s Qnexa will be the most promising of the drugs that achieve the most weight loss. However, the decision on that pill has been delayed until July by FDA. As per studies by Arena, patients, who have taken Belviq had modest weight loss. Average patients, who took this drug lost their weight just 3 to 3.7 percent of their starting body weight over the course of a year and approximately 47 percent of patients, who have no diabetes, lost at least 5 percent of their weight or more, which was sufficient to meet FDA standards for efficiency.

As per FDA, if patients became unsuccessful to lose 5 percent of their body weight, then they must stop taking Belviq after three months. Depression, migraine and memory lapses are the side effects with this drug. The approval of Arena's drug is recommended by a panel of expert advisers to the FDA with votes 18-4, in May and the conclusion was made that the benefits of this drug increase in overweight and obese people in comparison to the potential risks when it will be used for long time period.

There are some drugs available for short-term weight loss, but Xenical from Roche is the only one drug for long-term weight loss, approved by FDA, which is rarely prescribed due to disagreeable digestive side effects and modest weight loss. After 13 years of Xenical's approval, Belviq is the first new prescription drug to treat obesity that has been approved by FDA.
