Tradjenta- A new type 2 diabetes pills approved by FDA

A new drug manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim and Elly Lilly, Tradjenta also known by the generic name linagliptin has been approved recently by FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The pill helps to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, which is the most general form of the disease that affects 90-95% of the 24 million people in the US. Tradjenta tablets can be used together with diet and exercise.

How Tradjenta works?

The drug works by blocking the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) for raising the levels of insulin-stimulating hormones in the body. Improved blood sugar control can be experienced by patients through encouraging the discharge of insulin after a meal. The new drug has been approved as a stand-alone therapy or in grouping with older diabetes drugs such as metformin, sulfonylurea and pioglitazone.

FDA study:

The FDA told that Linagliptin was studied in around 4000 patients with type 2 diabetes and was superior to placebo in controlling glucose. Linagliptin was exposed to decrease hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C or A1C) levels equal to 0.7% in comparison to placebo. Tradjenta 5 mg once a day has been approved. Consult your doctor before taking Tradjenta if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, or have any other medical conditions. Also discuss with your doctor if you consume other medicines like vitamins, herbal supplements, prescription and non-prescription medicines, and medicines that can lower your blood sugar. Hunger, fast heart beat, weakness, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, confusion, irritability, sweating, or feeling jittery are the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar.
